Carol Friedman has photographed and filmed jazz, soul and classical recording artists for more than two decades. Her classic award-winning images may be seen on hundreds of album and CD covers. The acclaimed retrospective of her collection of Jazz portraits, The Jazz Pictures, was published by Arena Editions in 2002. Jazz artists, “the irreplacable ones,” were her first subjects and continue to inspire her work. In the 1990’s, Friedman was chief photographer and art director for Blue Note Records. She also served as vice president and creative director for Elektra Entertainment and for Motown Records. As a filmmaker, she has produced and directed music videos and, for more than a decade, has been documenting the life and work of singer Abbey Lincoln for a feature-length film titled Portrait of Abbey. In 2003, Friedman founded Dominick Media to publish a collection of books and music for children. The Nicky The Jazz Cat series, which features her genius cat Nicky, teaches children about Jazz and has received The Benjamin Franklin Book Award, Parents’ Choice Silver Music Award, iParenting Media Book and Music Awards, NAPPA Book Award, and American Library Association’s Notable Children’s Recording Award. She has recently partnered with powerHouse Books, and will publish several titles with them in 2007 and 2008. Friedman is currently shooting portraits for CD packages, advertising, and editorial campaigns, and is working on several book, film and music projects. She serves on the board of directors for the Grammy organization, The Recording Academy (NARAS) and Jazz Alliance International (JAI). She lives and works in New York City and frequents The Village Vanguard for continued inspiration. To view the Jazz Pictures' website you must have the latest version of Flash Player. Get Flash
